The Orange Grove/Lyman Community

The Orange Grove/Lyman area is a great place to start, grow, or move your business.  Compromised of the northern part of the City of Gulfport and extending north nearly to Saucier,  its' location is considered to be the "Gateway to the Gulf Coast".   Many businesses and families decide to make north Gulfport home every year as it is a much more community minded area than other larger metropolitan areas.  The central location of Highway 49 (which has a daily traffic count of as much as 55,000 vehicles per day) and Interstate 10 provides easy access to many amenities that the Mississippi Gulf Coast has to offer such as the worlds' largest man-made beach, casino resorts, water sports, historic museums, top quality dining, and extensive shopping. The many residents in our area tend to frequent the businesses located close to their homes, which offer a wide variety of services from personalized boutiques to big-box corporations.

History of Orange Grove / Lyman

The first legally noted settlers when the United States opened the Coast to citizens were James and Agnes Dale. They purchased land April 24, 1820, known as Wilson Farm Nurseries.  John G. and Sue J. Land purchased land in the Landon area in 1873.

Landon thrived with a brick kiln, a general store, and a post office for shipping pecans and oranges to the North.  The Creosote Company and Yarian were thriving businesses. In 1917, William Thompson donated land for a school which was called Orange Grove for the groves in the area.

North of Orange Grove is the community of Lyman.  Lyman Reeves moved his wife and four children there in 1885.  There he built a saw mill, Methodist Church, and a small store.  Today, all are gone except for the church.  The town was called Reeves Crossing until the community applied for a post office and discovered that there was another town named Reeves.  The town compromised and used its founder’s first name, Lyman.
